What is a Discount Calculator?
The Discount Calculator is a free tool that lets you quickly check how much you’ll actually pay and how much you’ll save based on a product’s list price and discount rate. For example, it makes it easy to perform common shopping calculations, such as “How much would a 12,000-yen item cost with a 30% discount?” or “What is the effective discount rate if you get an additional 10% off after a 20% discount?” You don’t need to enter the formula repeatedly on a calculator; you can view the discounted price, the discount amount, and the effective discount rate all at once.
This tool supports not only a single discount but also up to three consecutive discounts. Consecutive discounts are not simply added together. For example, if a 20% discount is followed by an additional 10% discount, the total is not 30% off. Instead, the price is first reduced to 80% of the original price, and then an additional 10% is deducted from that price, resulting in an effective discount rate of 28%. This allows you to accurately determine the final price when multiple discounts—such as sales, coupons, and membership discounts—are applied simultaneously.
Once you enter the quantity, the total payment amount and total discount amount for purchasing multiple items will be calculated. Additionally, if you specify a tax rate as needed, the tool will display the total payment amount, which includes tax added to the discounted price. You can select major currencies such as JPY, USD, EUR, and GBP, but this tool does not perform currency conversion. Currencies are used solely to make the display of amounts easier to understand.
In “Calculate Discount Rate from List Price and Sale Price” mode, you can simply enter the list price and sale price displayed on price tags or e-commerce sites to see the discount percentage. In “Calculate List Price from Sale Price and Discount Rate” mode, you can determine the original price when only the discounted price is known. This tool can be used not only for shopping but also for checking quotes, price revisions, promotional strategies, and e-commerce operations.
Calculations are performed within the user’s browser using JavaScript; the entered amount is not sent to the server for calculation. Actual stores and e-commerce sites may have their own rules regarding tax calculation order, rounding of fractional amounts, coupon application order, excluded items, minimum purchase amounts, and more. Please also check the display and terms of service for the service you are using to confirm the final billing amount.
This is also helpful when it’s difficult to determine the true value of a deal by comparing discount rates alone. For example, even for the same product, Store A might offer 25% off, while Store B might offer 20% off plus an additional 10% coupon—the conditions may differ. Since the effective discount rate for the latter is 28%, this allows for a more accurate assessment than simply comparing the initial displayed rates.Since you can also check the total amount, including the quantity, at the same time, this is convenient for comparing bulk purchases, limited-time sales, and situations where multiple coupons are used together.
Example of discount calculation
- 20% off 10,000 yen → 8,000 yen; discount amount: 2,000 yen.
- 10,000 yen, 20% off, then an additional 10% off → 7,200 yen, effectively 28% off.
- 3 items priced at 5,000 yen each, 15% off → Total before tax: 12,750 yen.
- Regular price: 8,000 yen, sale price: 6,000 yen → 25% OFF.
- After the 20% discount, the price is 8,000 yen → The original price was 10,000 yen.
How to Use
- From "Calculation Type," select either "Calculate Sale Price," "Calculate Discount Rate," or "Calculate List Price."
- Enter the amount, and to calculate the sale price, enter the discount rate. For example, for 20% off, enter "20."
- If there are additional coupons or member discounts, enter them in "Discount Rate 2" and "Discount Rate 3." Fields left blank will be treated as 0%.
- Specify the quantity, tax rate, and currency as needed, then click "Calculate."
- The results will display the payment amount, discount amount, effective discount rate, and other details. You can copy the results and paste them into other apps using the "Copy Results" option.
Precautions for Use
- Cumulative discounts apply each discount in sequence. A 20% + 10% discount is not calculated as 30%.
- Tax rates are applied to the price after discounts. This may differ from the store’s standard order for applying taxes and discounts.
- This tool performs general calculations of amounts. It does not account for store-specific rounding rules or minimum prices.
- Currency selection is not a currency conversion. It is a setting that displays results in the selected currency format.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is 20% off?
This is the price obtained by multiplying the list price by 0.8. For example, 10,000 yen becomes 8,000 yen, resulting in a 2,000 yen discount.
If there’s a 20% off sale followed by a 10% off sale, does that mean 30% off?
No. If the price is 10,000 yen, it first becomes 8,000 yen, and then 10% is deducted, resulting in 7,200 yen; therefore, the effective discount rate is 28%.
Can multiple discounts be calculated?
Yes. You can apply up to three discount rates sequentially. This can be used to verify whether coupons and membership discounts can be combined.
Can you calculate the discount rate?
Yes. Once you enter the list price and sale price, you can calculate the discount amount and discount rate.
Can you calculate the regular price from the discounted price?
Yes. When you enter the sale price and the discount rate, you will be prompted to enter the original price before the discount.
Can it also calculate the total when multiple items are purchased?
Yes. When you enter a quantity, it displays the discounted price per item, the total amount due, and the total discount amount.
Can calculations include consumption tax and VAT?
Yes. You can enter a tax rate of your choice. This tool adds tax to the price after the discount has been applied.
Can I still use it even if I set the tax rate to 0?
Yes. The tax rate is optional. If it is 0 or left blank, the calculation will be made without adding tax.
Can I use foreign currencies?
Yes. You can select major currencies such as JPY, USD, EUR, and GBP. However, this is not an exchange rate conversion feature.
Does it support fractional discount rates?
Yes. You can also enter discount rates with decimals, such as 12.5%.
Is the amount I entered sent to the server?
No. The calculation is performed within the browser, and the amount you enter is not sent to the server for calculation.
Is the amount sometimes different from the actual checkout total?
Yes. Since the order in which taxes and discounts are applied, as well as how rounding is handled, varies by store and e-commerce site, please check the seller’s display for the final purchase amount.
