What is an image compression tool?

An image compression tool is an online tool designed to reduce file size while preserving the appearance of photos and illustrations as much as possible. When using images on websites, blogs, e-commerce sites, in emails, chats, or documents, large file sizes can slow down display and transmission times. By adjusting the image to an appropriate quality and size, you can reduce loading times and data usage.

This tool allows you to save files in JPEG, WebP, and PNG formats. JPEG and WebP are suitable for photos, and you can expect significant file size reductions by slightly lowering the image quality. PNG is suitable for logos, diagrams, and transparent images; however, because PNG uses lossless compression, adjusting the image quality slider may not result in as much of a file size reduction as with JPEG.

If you want to reduce the file size even further, review not only the image quality but also the image dimensions. Images taken with a camera are often larger than what is needed for on-screen display, and simply limiting the longer side to 1920px or 1280px can significantly reduce the file size. You can also choose a setting to preserve the original size, allowing you to adjust it according to your needs.

Selected images are processed using the browser's Canvas feature. Since image files are not uploaded to the server, you can use personal photos or business-related images with relative peace of mind. However, the maximum size and supported formats depend on the browser you are using and the available memory on your device.

How to Use

  1. Drag and drop an image, or select a file using the "Select Image" button.
  2. Select the file format, image quality, and maximum image size as needed.
  3. Click "Compress Image."
  4. Check the original image, the compressed preview, the file size, and the compression rate.
  5. If everything looks good, click "Download Compressed Image."

Important Notes

  • If you select a low image quality setting, text and fine details may appear blurry, and edges may become distorted.
  • Since PNG uses a different compression method than JPEG or WebP, simply adjusting the image quality may not always reduce the file size.
  • JPEGs cannot preserve transparency. They will be filled with the specified background color.
  • Images with multiple frames, such as animated GIFs, are treated as still images.
  • Very large images may not be processed due to insufficient device memory.
